Research in Education: Studying Educational Inequality and Possiblity, EDUC W153

The goal of the Research in Education is to introduce students to educational research and the methods and frameworks used to examine key educational topics related to educational inequity and educational possibility. Students also will develop robust understandings of relevant theories and methods by engaging with research focused around the set of core topics. In this way, students will become ‘re-searchers’ of enduring educational issues.

Kris Gutierrez
Kris D. Gutiérrez holds the Carol Liu Chair in Educational Policy and is a professor of Language, Literacy and Culture. Before coming to Berkeley, she was a professor of Learning Sciences/Literacy and the Inaugural Provost’s Chair, University of Colorado, Boulder and Professor Emerita of Social Research Methodology at GSE&IS at UCLA. Professor Gutiérrez is a national leader in education, with an emphasis in literacy, learning sciences, and interpretive and design-based approaches to inquiry. Gutiérrez is a member of the National Academy of Education and is the Past President of the American Educational Research Association and the National Conference on Research on Language and Literacy. Gutiérrez was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a member of the National Board for the Institute of Education Sciences where she served as Vice Chair. Kris D. Christyna Serrano
Dr. Christyna Serrano is a graduate of the Policy, Organizations, Measurement, and Evaluation (POME) program in the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley. Her dissertation examined the implementation of a federal policy (the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010) and its implementation at the local level (the Oakland Unified School District). While a graduate student at UC Berkeley, Christyna co-designed and was the instructor of record for "Critical Studies in Education" (ED 190) from 2013-2016. During the 2016-2017 academic year, she designed an online version of ED 190, which she piloted in the Summer of 2016 and will also be teaching during the Spring 2018 semester.
