Enrollment and waitlists for Fall Quarter 2023 will CLOSE on September 27, 2023 at 5:00pm.
An interdisciplinary study of the methods of human deception detection from the perspectives of law enforcement, national security and intelligence analysis, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, and communication. How to accurately determine when someone is lying is a multi-disciplinary problem and requires a variety of technological and data analytic solutions. Our primary goal will be to comprehend a representative picture of the traditional and contemporary theories regarding the intersection of communication, cognition, and emotion in deception detection.
Courses offered through UCSB's College of Letters & Science are subject to UCSB's Tech Fee, which supports instructional technology enhancements via Collaborate services. The fee is $2.50 per unit. The fee is processed shortly after the final undergraduate drop deadline in the fourth week of each quarter. After that deadline, fee refunds cannot be issued for dropped classes.

Norah Dunbar
Dr. Dunbar is a Professor of Communication at UCSB. She teaches courses in nonverbal and interpersonal communication, communication theory, and deception detection. She is also Affiliate Faculty in the Center for Information, Technology & Society; the Center for Digital Games Research; and the Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences program. She has received over $18 Million in research funding from agencies such as the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the Center for Identification Technology Research. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has presented over 120 papers at National and International conferences. Her research has appeared in top journals in her discipline including Communication Research, Communication Monographs, and Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication as well as interdisciplinary journals such as Journal of Management Information Systems and Computers in Human Behavior. She has served on the editorial board of over a dozen disciplinary journals and as the Chair of the Nonverbal Division of the National Communication Association in 2014-2016. She is the immediate past Chair of the Communication Department at UCSB.
