Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour. Survey of characteristics of social life, processes of social interaction, and tools of sociological investigation. P/NP or letter grading.

Prof. Collett is a sociological social psychologist who studies self and identity, small group processes, and the connection between the two. For example, she's currently studying low-income fathers, many who were raised in families with either absent or uninvolved fathers. She is interested in understanding how these men define what it means to be a father, develop their own identities as fathers, and evaluate their own performance in the role identity. She loves teaching Introductory Sociology because it is the course that made her fall in love with the discipline and decide to pursue it as a career. She began teaching at UCLA in 2018, after spending her first twelve years as a professor at the University of Notre Dame where she received the Sheedy Excellence in Teaching Award. She teaches SOCIOL 1 in both online and face-to-face formats.
