Personal Finance and Investing, COWL 52

Enrollment and waitlists for Spring Quarter 2024 will CLOSE – April 5, 2024 at 5:00pm.

Overview of the financial responsibilities that young adults take on after college. Topics include: taxes, budgeting, student loans, credit, and investing in the stock market. Ubiquitous terms, such as 401(k), are defined, and financial principles are used to develop a framework for personal financial decision-making.

Upon successful completion, all online courses offered through cross-enrollment provide UC unit credit. Some courses are approved for GE, major preparation and/or, major credit or can be used as a substitute for a course at your campus.

More About The Course

Online Format: The course, including all lectures, readings, assignments, quizzes and final are on Canvas. Students can move through the course basically at their own pace. Online—or Zoom—sessions will review the material, homework assignments and current stock market activity. Participation credit will be earned in these sessions.

Patricia Kelly is a private investor living in the Monterey Bay Area.  After working on Wall Street in corporate finance, she spent her career in  investment management, investing for private and corporate clients, including the Vanguard Equity Income Fund.  She currently manages private portfolios in Aptos, California.  She serves on the investment committees of several nonprofit organizations.  Patricia M. Kelly holds a BA in Economics from UCSC and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
