Mahtab Jafari

Dr. Mahtab Jafari is a professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the director of the newly launched “The UCI Center for Healthspan Sciences” at the University of California, Irvine. She is also a certified Health and Wellness Coach and dedicated to inspiring her students to create a work-life balance and achieve their health goals. The focus of her research has been on slowing the aging process and adding healthy years to human life through a science that she introduced as Healthspan Pharmacology. Using various model systems such as fruit flies, she has evaluated the impact of botanical extracts and dietary supplements on aging. She is now shifting the focus of her research to using OMIC-AI technologies to identify interventions that would ameliorate the progression of chronic diseases.

Dr. Jafari received her Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) and completed a residency at the University of California, San Francisco. She was on the faculty at the UCSF School of Pharmacy prior to joining the faculty at UCI. She has also hold clinical positions such as Director of the Cholesterol Clinic and the Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program at UCI Medical Center. In 2001, she left academia and joined Abbott Laboratories as a senior scientist in the Neuroscience group and eventually became a regional medical scientific manager. In 2005, she was recruited back to UCI to develop a new major in Pharmaceutical Sciences and help develop the new Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Dr. Jafari has been the recipient of a number of teaching and mentoring awards including the 2008 and 2013 UCI Distinguished Professor Teaching Award, 2008 UCI Chancellor’s award for Fostering Undergraduate Research, and the 2011 and 2013 UCI Pharmaceutical Sciences the Most Inspirational Professor Award.
