Arabic 102A: Intermediate Standard Arabic, ARABIC 102A

Lecture, four hours. Enforced requisite: course 1C or 8. Course 102A is requisite to 102B, which is requisite to 102C. Not open to students who have learned, from whatever source, enough Arabic to qualify for more advanced courses. Intermediate formal Arabic, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. P/NP or letter grading.

Abeer Hamza, Ph.D.

Abeer Hamza has many years of experience in teaching languages. Currently, she teaches Modern Standard Arabic and Spoken Egyptian Arabic courses at UCLA. She also created and teaches the “Readings in Standard Arabic'' course. Recently, Dr. Hamza earned two grants to develop a series of online intermediate and advanced Arabic courses that will be taught across UC campuses starting fall 2023. Previously, Abeer developed a range of materials and activities complementary to the textbook utilized for the Arabic classes. She also created spoken Egyptian Arabic web-program modules. Abeer administers the Arabic language placement exams and conducts the oral proficiency interviews. Abeer earned her Ph.D. from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt in 2000. She received Arabic teaching pedagogy training at the University of Texas at Austin. She participated in several professional development workshops and conferences at UCLA and other institutions. Abeer’s research interests include language pedagogy, language assessment, and comparative Spanish and Arabic literature. In addition, she has been keen to explore the different online teaching and learning pedagogies and the new methods and tools in this field of education.
