Elementary Dutch, DUTCH 1
This introduction to the Dutch language focuses on the development of basic communicative competencies (spoken and written). Students will be able to understand and use high frequency vocabulary and basic grammatical structures.

More About The Course
This class will meet three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at the assigned hours. Since this class is open for both UC Berkeley students and for students from other UC’s, instruction will be delivered in a format that allows for participation from both on campus and online students.

On Mondays, classes will be held fully in Zoom for all students. On Wednesdays and Fridays, classes will be held in-person on the UC Berkeley campus in a classroom with the necessary equipment to allow online students to join in via Zoom.

Please note that this course follows the Berkeley (semester) calendar. For Fall 2023, the first day of classes is Wednesday August 23 and the last day of classes is Monday December 4. Ireen Esmee Van Der Hoeven
Esmée van der Hoeven is Continuing Lecturer in the Dutch Studies Program at the Department of German at UC Berkeley. She has an MA degree in Language and Culture Studies from Utrecht University (2004), and received her certification in teaching Dutch as a Foreign Language from VU University Amsterdam (2006). She is experienced in teaching Dutch language courses on all levels and has a special focus on conversation practice and writing skills. At UC Berkeley, she is responsible for the Dutch Language Program. She is also Program Director in the Berkeley Summer Abroad Program to the Netherlands and Belgium. Before she came to Berkeley, she has taught Dutch language and culture at Utrecht University, Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, Delft University of Technology, and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.
