Dutch for Reading Knowledge, DUTCH 100

This course is focused on developing reading skills in Dutch. The course is taught in English, and open to all students who want to start learning Dutch or wish to solidify their knowledge of Dutch grammar from a reader’s perspective. There is a strong emphasis on grammar, syntax, and basic Dutch vocabulary.

More About The Course

Please be advised that this course follows the UC Berkeley (semester) schedule of classes. For Fall 2022, the instruction start date is Wednesday August 24, 2022 and the instruction end date is Friday December 9, 2022. Since Dutch 100 usually has a small class size of fewer than 10 students, there may be some flexibility with regard to the class schedule if preferable. For example, in Fall 2020, classes met twice a week for 1.5 hours instead of three times a week for 1 hour. Please feel free to contact the instructor with any questions or concerns.

Esmée van der Hoeven is Continuing Lecturer in the Dutch Studies Program at the Department of German at UC Berkeley. She has an MA degree in Language and Culture Studies from Utrecht University (2004), and received her certification in teaching Dutch as a Foreign Language from VU University Amsterdam (2006). She is experienced in teaching Dutch language courses on all levels and has a special focus on conversation practice and writing skills. At UC Berkeley, she is responsible for the Dutch Language Program. She is also Program Director in the Berkeley Summer Abroad Program to the Netherlands and Belgium. Before she came to Berkeley, she has taught Dutch language and culture at Utrecht University, Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, Delft University of Technology, and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.
